About the Author

Maxine lived a large portion of her childhood in her father’s hometown of Lake City, SC, but being an “Army brat” afforded her the opportunity to reside throughout the United States.

She has enjoyed writing and creating books since she was in kindergarten. In high school she became a published poet after winning a writing contest. This encouraged Maxine to continue writing and compiling her poetry and stories.

Maxine attended Mercer University in Macon, Ga. where she majored in English and minored in Psychology prior to marrying her high school sweetheart, Hal. Throughout the years Hal was in medical school in Charleston, SC, Maxine’s love and concern for the sea turtles, so treasured on the South Carolina beaches, was deepened and their plight inspired her.

When her husband became a Navy doctor they had the opportunity to live on both coasts of the United States and the Mediterranean coast in Naples, Italy. During these years Maxine and Hal had their daughter, Elizabeth, and two sons, Eric and Lane. Maxine’s perpetual love of sea turtles was the impetus for poems and stories she wrote for her children.

Gert the See Turtle was born from Maxine’s love of sea turtles and desire for her children, as well as all children, to observe the world around them and enjoy learning.
